Acquiring or renewing a passport does not have to be difficult. With a little preparation and early planning, you'll be ready to depart for your travels in no time.

Note: the information provided below is intended to give you general information about acquiring or renewing a U.S. passport. For the most up-to-date information, please refer to www.travel.state.gov/passport.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I obtain an application for a passport?

You can download and print the Application for Passport, Form DS-11, at www.travel.state.gov/passport. Forms can also be obtained from any Passport Agency. NOTE: DO NOT sign the DS-11 application form until the Passport Acceptance Agent instructs you to do so.

Where can I go locally to obtain a passport?

High Point's main post office is located at 315 E. Green Street, convenient to the HPU campus. Passport Agency hours are 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday. Applications are accepted by appointment only. Call in advance to schedule your appointment: 1(800) 275-8777.

What should I take with me to apply in person?

You will need the application form and two 2x2 inch color passport photographs, a valid ID (driver's license or state issued identification card), proof of citizenship (previously issued U.S. passport or certified birth certificate) and Social Security card.

How do I get a passport photo?

Digitized passport photos may be used or you may have photographs taken at the Passport Agency, FedEx Kinko's, or Walgreens. Refer to www.travel.state.gov/passport for passport photograph requirements.

How much does a passport cost?

For age 16 and older, the passport application fee is $110 made payable to the U.S. Department of State plus an acceptance fee (for non-renewal applicants) of $25 made payable to the Postmaster, totaling $135. During application, a passport card can be issued for an additional $30 passport fee. An expedited passport application will add an extra $60 fee plus overnight delivery costs.

How long will it take to process a passport application?

Routine service is usually around 6-8 weeks. Expedited service is approximately 2-4 weeks, plus mailing time.

Can I check the status of my application?

Your status may be tracked online 7-10 days after application.

What do I need to know about visas?

U.S. Citizens may be required to have a visa, in addition to a valid U.S. passport, for entry into certain countries. Please check with the Office of Study Abroad for visa information about your particular program.

What if I'm not a U.S. Citizen?

Non-U.S. Passport holders may be required to have visas to enter some countries. It is the student's responsibility to make sure that s/he has all the necessary visas before s/he departs. Students must consult their local consulate or embassy for information regarding which countries require visas.

What is the passport card, and is it an acceptable alternative to the passport book?

The passport card is a wallet-size card that can only be used for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Because the passport card is not valid for any air travel, High Point University requires travelers on all international study abroad programs carry the traditional passport book.

Please note: The High Point University Passport ID card is not an official, government issued, travel document. You must have a valid U.S. passport to participate in any of High Point University's international programs. In addition, your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your scheduled return date. If you do not have a passport, your passport has expired, or your passport will soon expire, you should start the application process NOW!
