Description
Dr. Alexis A. Wright in the High Point University Department of Physical Therapy seeks to identify 1-3 volunteer research assistants to assist in writing two manuscripts related to the practice of physical therapy. One of the projects is related to young adults who suffer from hip pain secondary to the pathology known as 'Femoracetabular impingement'. This pathology often causes sharp hip and groin pain in young adults, especially those who have previous involvements in sports and can lead to loss of function, decreased ability to participate in sport, and can later lead to osteoarthritis of the hip. The purpose of this manuscript will be to identify patient characteristics that determine patient prognosis. This paper will also lay the foundation for potential future grant opportunities related to physical therapy treatment in patients with this pathology and whether physical therapy treatment can prevent or delay the need for surgery in this patient population.
A second, unrelated proposed manuscript is related to the report of 'Minimal Clinically Important Difference' (MCID) Scores in commonly used outcome measures. If you have ever been treated by a healthcare practitioner, they often ask you to fill out some type of functional outcome measure to determine your current level of function. This same outcome measure if often used throughout treatment and during your last visit to determine your improvement and response to treatment. Often, healthcare providers used a pre-determined score to report whether you have met what is known as a 'minimal clinically important difference' which is suggested as improvement beyond normal chance and related to the specific treatment received. Unfortunately, the methodology behind these scores is poor and this project will report on the wide range of reported MCID scores to help clinicians understand why these scores should not be the ultimate decision making tool when discharging patients from treatment.

Research assistant experience for resume, curriculum vitate, or graduate school applications
Potential to be a published author in a peer-reviewed journal before you graduate!
Qualifications
Basic knowledge of scholarly research online search engines, including PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Medline
